Ethical AI: a groundbreaking initiative to address the new challenges posed by AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI), which holds great promise, helps tackle major societal and environmental challenges, optimise business operations, and provide faster and more accurate diagnoses, amongst other things. However, certain technologies – particularly the most recent ones known as deep learning – can give rise to mistrust and legitimate public concern. It is essential to approach AI solutions differently in order to meet expectations regarding trustworthy solutions and a commitment to responsible digital practices.

Ethical AI is a pioneering project that brings together a network of partners (professional organisations, educational institutions, interdisciplinary AI institutes, associations, foundations, think tanks, etc.) committed to more responsible digital technology. Building on one of the recommendations of the Villani report, its aim is to support ‘AI developers’ who wish to place ethics at the heart of their activities, thereby helping to translate general ethical principles—derived from existing research—into practical methods and tools. The added value derived from the more responsible solutions thus created will contribute to the strategic differentiation of technology developed in France on the international stage and make it more competitive.

It is now essential to advance practices at all levels (training, design, development, deployment, etc.) in order to operate more efficiently and with a view to continuous improvement.
