What if we got sovereignty wrong?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes a national ambition is put to the test by what looks, at first glance, like a simple business decision\u2026 On August 11, 2026, Mistral AI announced that it would open its so-called \u201csovereign\u201d infrastructure to models developed by other companies. The first of these, GLM-5.2, was designed by Z.ai, one of the major players in Chinese artificial intelligence. Mistral makes no secret of its origin or its status: it is indeed a third-party model offered within its European infrastructure (Mistral AI, 2026a).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, the South China Morning Post<\/em> summed up, with an irony that is hard to ignore, how this decision might look from Asia: Europe was supposedly \u201cplugging a Chinese AI brain into what would, in practice, be a European shell<\/em>\u201d (South China Morning Post<\/em>, 2026, author\u2019s translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The phrase is deliberately provocative. It oversimplifies a far more complex technical and industrial reality, but it puts its finger on a contradiction we can no longer sidestep: what does sovereignty still mean when you control the infrastructure, the data, and the execution conditions, but the intelligence itself was designed elsewhere?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taken in isolation, Mistral\u2019s choice is perfectly defensible. An AI company can hardly claim to meet every need with its own models alone, especially at a time when architectures are multiplying and customers are looking for more choice, performance, and control. Yet in Mistral\u2019s case, this decision carries implications that go far beyond its business strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
